ICELIZARD writes "As everyone knows, their is a crazy rumour out their saying Carey Price is on the trading blocks and that he will most likely go to Chicago in a multi-player deal.
Let me just say I find this rumour hard to believe since Gainey did state again and again that Price is the goaltender of the future with the Habs, a bluechipper no-less! Moreover, being only 21, he still has lots of growing up to do and won't reach his peak until he hits his late twenties.
With this said, Gainey also said Carbo was his best signing and then fired him a few months later; told the press that Komisarek was captain material and his #1 priority for July 1st (free agency) and then lost him to Toronto; led everyone to believe he was going to sign or trade for bigger players this year (especially at center) and then signed yet even smaller players then in past years, notably Gionta & Cammalleri, although these two players do have great talent and work hard every game. All this to say, Gainey hasn't always been honnest with the press or the fans in the recent past, so why should we trust him now with the Price trade rumours?
Some say Halak is playing the bulk of the games since he's being "showcased" to other teams. I think he is simply playing better then Price and is also more determined and works harder then Price in practices, which coach Martin sees clearly. Also, let's not be surprised if the Molsons told Gainey to get rid of Price + the Kostitsyn bros by the trading dealine since they are tarnishing the name, the logo, the History of the Habs...
Thus, if I was Gainey and needed/wanted to trade Price for whatever reason, I would make sure to orchestrate a bidding war amongst three or four teams. Moreover, I would tell the teams interested in Price: " If you want him, you need to take the Kostitsyn bros as well". I'm sure their will be takers... The teams that come to mind are: 1. Chicago 2. Detroit 3. L.A. Kings 4. Toronto
Yes, you read correctly, Toronto! I'm not suggesting Gainey trades Price + the K bros the Toronto, I am saying Gainey should use a team like Toronto to drive up the costs. Thus, instead of getting a goalie + a roaster player in return for the trio, we could easily receive an NHL goalie, a top six forward (RW), a top four d-man (RW) and top draft picks (1st & 2nd round).
Again, the chances of Price being traded I believe to be very slim. But, in the unlikely event Gainey needs to (for a variety of reasons) trade Price, my gut feeling is telling me he's heading to Detroit since they have what Montreal really needs: Talented d-man + high draft picks.

2010/09/01: Carey Price and the Montreal Canadiens are continuing to progress in their contract negotiations, according to Price's agent Gerry Johannson. However, he added that there is still plenty of work to do before anything concrete can be finalized. Reports that the RFA netminder would go on "strike" if he does not receive a deal that pays him $3 million a year appear to be a bit premature, but stay tuned for updates. (Source: TSN.ca)
Carey Price, G
2010/08/31: CBC-Montreal reporter Michel Godbout says that a "very very reliable source" has told him that restricted free agent Carey Price will "strike" if Montreal doesn't give him a contract worth $3 million per season. Take this story with more than just a grain of salt, but it's worth noting that former Montreal goaltender Jaroslav Halak's deal with St. Louis will pay him an average of $3.75 million per season over the next four years. Of course, despite Price's upside, Halak does have the better track record. We'll keep you posted. (Source: Montreal Gazette)

2010/08/30: Andrei Markov (knee surgery) has begun skating by himself, according to RDS. He was hurt during Montreal's second-round playoff series against the Pittsburgh Penguins. Markov required surgery to repair a torn ACL in his right knee and he is projected to miss the first six to eight weeks of the regular-season. (Source: Habs Inside/Out)

The Canadiens' first-round pick (22nd overall) in the 2010 draft chose to suit up for the Ontario Hockey League's London Knights over playing NCAA puck with Notre Dame this coming season. "You look at a program and an organization like the London Knights and the way they develop players," said Tinordi. 2010/08/04: Carey Price's agent, Gerry Johannson, thinks that his client will sign with the Montreal Canadiens by the end of August or early September. Price is currently a restricted free agent. Johannson said that the Montreal Canadiens and him "are not necessarily close, but it's not that we're not close in a bad way. Its interesting, here's my problem with it though:
Its true, Detroit is kind of going through a "rebuild" of sorts (for lack of a better word), but overall they are still a team equipped to win right now. Price doesn't offer any kind of upgrade on Osgood and Howard right now. He's younger so the potential for him to be the guy in a few years is interesting but I don't think the Red Wings are interested in a project. They would be more likely to deal for a veteran to help them throughout the year (Biron or Roloson?) and then try for another year of Osgood playoff magic.
Just my take.
Also from a Montreal standpoint, this is a team that is not a contender this year anyway's so they're better off holding onto Price and hoping he becomes the guy they think he is. If they could hypothetically land one of Detroit's talented players like Val Fillpula for Price then they have to pull the trigger but the Red Wings would not go for that. So I just don't think there's a deal that makes sense between these teams.

Yeah, who's going to give:
- NHL calibre goalie - top 6 forward - top 4 defenceman - 1st and 2nd round pick
FOR
- S Kostitsyn (can't make the lowly Canadiens drama-baby who thinks roster spots should be given to him... also a high threat to bolt back to Russia if he's not happy with his assignment) - A Kostitsyn (largely invisible underachiever with 1 goal in 14 games this season) - Price (had 1 good season, 1 horrible season last year. Seems to have picked up where he left off last year!)
........... and you expect other GM's to pay top line players and picks for this trio of underachievers and drama queens? LMAO Players lose value when they play consistently bad, not gain it.
You'd be lucky to get anything more than a 4th round pick for S Kostitsyn, lucky to get anything more than 2nd or 3rd round pick for A Kostitsyn, and who knows what GM's would pay for Price- he hasn't been good for 2 seasons, so you're not going to get a lot.
Price is a crapshoot right now, so MTL is best to hold onto him and A Kost (send S Kost packing), and hope they can find good form later this season.
Terrible terrible suggestions, really.. a handful of top players and draft picks for a few invisibles and a benchwarmer. This is almost JFJ worthy.

Kipper, Turco. Give the kid a damn break. The reason halak is playing so much ya he is playing better, but did anyone ever realise that halak is playing much also to increase his trade value. Look at the big picture here guys comeon. Believe me Price is going nowhere. If he gets traded its gonna be the single biggest mistake in habs history besides trading P roy for kovalenko thibault and rusinsky.

I know Price got shelled in a couple of games this year, but he also single-handedly won the team a couple games (against Toronto and Buffalo to start the season). I'm not about to write off Price's value after doing poorly behind a vastly different squad that was missing it's very best player. That said, there is no way Price nets the kind of return you are talking about.
Also, Toronto and Los Angeles have no interest in adding Carey Price to their roster. Unless you want Jason Blake or Jeff Finger, than you can keep Price, and we'll stick with Gustavsson. Los Angeles has Quick playing just fine right now, and Bernier waiting in the wings. In 2-3 years, free agent goalies are going to want to sign in CHicago to play behind Doughty, Johnson, Hickey, Teubert, and whoever the eventually sign or trade for to lead the defensive crew. No need to overpay for Price.
I was thinking earlier, that San Jose might not be a bad place to start with Carey Price trade talk. If you are looking to dump the Kostitsyn's as well, then you have to look to a team that has very little in terms of offensive depth. Once you get past the top two lines in San Jose, the name recognition quickly drops off from Marleau et. al to Staubitz Ortmeyer, Ferriero, etc.... Clowe has been under-performing in San Jose this year, and I believe has french roots. He also has all the size the Habs would need. Still, the deal only makes sense if a quality goaltender can go back to Montreal, and they only have Greiss past Nabokov. They would have to acquire a goalie first:
To Montreal : Goalie, Clowe, 1st round pick To San Jose: Price, Kostitsyn, Kostitsyn
Maybe they send Greiss, and a 3rd round pick to the Islanders for Biron beforehand, and include him in the deal.
The Sharks add depth to their roster, hope that the Kostitsyn's can regain their form playing 3rd line minutes together, on other side of Malhotra, out of the Canadian spotlight. They add a goalie for their future, and dump a little bit of salary (Andrei has only one year left on his deal, where as Clowe has 3 more - Andrei would be easier to move later, if they need extra space to sign Pavelski and Setoguchi)

I doubt Carey Price will be traded i don't know why people think it and i knew this would come up once Halak started playing games. I have always been a fan of Halak and a fan of the idea of playing the hot hand with such young goalies. But Price needs time look Marc Andre Fleury did along with many others. Looks at Steve Mason's sophmore season...nothing like before..take it easy! lol
Unless a trade that made a lot of sense came up for the habs i wouldn't go out and trade Price it makes no sense especially when there is no other goalies in the system after Price and Halak.
The only concern I have, is that it would be great if Price could convince us that he is the guy so that we can trade Halak whose value just keeps going up for something good. Because until we're sure about Price i don't know if its such a good idea to get rid of Halak..even for next season. Unless Gainey think he can get a very competent cheap back up off the free agent market if he trades Halak by the deadline.

Hey guys, I've read your comments and as always everyone is very passionate about Price & the Habs (good or bad) which is fine by me.
However, I must disagree with those whom suggest Price has little or no value. You shouldn't look at his present stats since they could be misleading. He's still a very good goalie and is not missing much to be a great goalie... Better d-man sure will help. Moreover, ask GM's and scouts around the NHL if they would trade for Price or better yet what is Price's value on the open market and you might be surprised at the response.
Again, as I stated at the begining and conclusion of my article, I don't think Price will get traded. I had the inclination to write this article since, as all of you bloggers, I read all those trade rumours about Price and wanted to express my opinion on it.
Let's put things into perspective here... If Gainey was able to get Josh Georges + 1st round player (turned out to be Pacioretty) for Craig Rivet, whom was an average d-man at best, I don't think it's far fetched that Gainey can get two roster players + 1st round pick for Price, which is basically one player more than we got for Rivet. The 2 K bros can get us that NHL goalie in return.
I think what is throwing everybody off is that I stated Detroit will be the trade partner if ever this happens, which seem to have struck a nerve to most of you since Detroit will never trade for a "project". My opinion on that is if Price will play behind d-man such as: Lidstrom, Rafalski, Eriksson, Stuart & company on a daily basis, I think it's fair to say he will play with more confidence and his personal stats will greatly improve.
Anyway, I am also very passionate about the subject and could rattle on forever... I'll look out for your opinions and perhaps trade possibilities...
Re: PRICE TO DETROIT? (Score: 1) by Promateus on Monday, November 02 (User Info | Send a Message)
Let's start with something obvious: Price isn't leaving for less than Heatley went for, and that would be bare minimum (actually, that would assuredly not be enough, but let us still set a minimum threshold). If you believe he doesn't have that VALUE, for whatever reasons (intrinsic or related to the actual market), than it goes without saying that he is not going anywhere. So it's either he's going nowhere, or he's traded in a MAJOR deal.
On that count, it goes without saying that the only real possibility, IMHO, is NJ's Brodeur (+ ...). Any team that would trade for Price would have to be a team with no Number 1 goalie (or who had just traded it's no1 for price), and with a better-than-average Defensive D corp. I honestly can't find anything else than NJ. Vinny maybe in a year or two... but unlikely.
On a side note, Toronto have nothing of the sort that would even permit Gainey to use them for Price-raising purposes ― pun intended.
The Habs might be forced to trade one of them by the deadline. Next year the Habs have already their cap to 45.732 Millions dedicated to players under contract, not counting the players they will have to resign, players like Plekanec, Metropolite, Bergeron, Mara, D'ago, Lats, Lapierre,Chipchura and Stewart. If we resign most of them it will take the habs close to 60 million, right up against the cap and that's before signing either one of their goalie.
So i think a trade will come regardless, it might be to make room so the Habs can actually have cap space for both their goalies.
Price has more of a chance of being traded than I do of coming home to the old lady saying, hey found this hot blonde and thought you might like her!!!! LOL.... and i know what those odds are!!!!!

Where is Price a goaltending solution in the league? He's not even a solution in Montreal. Sure, he has value as he still has significant upside however goaltending is an erratic position I don't see anyone overpaying for such a gamble.
We've seen JFJ make this mistake twice. Trading a 1st round pick for an overrated/underrated goaltender (say what you want about Toskala, Raycorft/Price is a fair analogy). Both were huge busts. Florida made the similar misstep with Voukoun. I doubt other GMs have ignored these examples.
Carey's price is no more than a 1st round and a prospect.
People can speculate all they want, but Gainey hitched his horse to Carey Price a long time ago and he is not about to undo that anytime soon. The reality is that Price does have value...in Montreal...anywhere else his value goes down. The real people with trade value right now in Montreal are Plekanec (who has had a very good start to his season) and Halak. Plekanec is doing very well right now, but as mentioned throughout the past few years by many others, unless you have extremely skilled small centers (i.e. Detroit), the chances of success in the post-season when you are small down the middle are slim. Gomez isn't going anywhere, therefore Plekanec is the one that has to be replaced...There aren't too many big bodied centremen available, but I can think of two off the top of my head... Arnott and Forsberg. My choice is Forsberg...even though the chances of him landing in Montreal are slim, but Montreal should try.
If they can land him this possibly opens the door to a trade with Florida for Horton (a somewhat disgruntled player) for Plekanec and either a prospect (D'Agostini) or a high pick.
At that point Montreal's top six looks like this: Cammalleri - Gomez - Gionta ??? - Forsberg - Horton
I put in the ??? because Montreal's solutions to this position have not worked out thus far. Whether it has been Andrei Kostitsyn, Pacioretty or Latendresse filling one of the wing positions it hasn't meant success.
If somehow Los Angeles would want to take Hamrlik off of Montreal's hands for a pick (2nd or 3rd round) and do them a favour like Montreal did for the Rangers with Gomez, that would be great...because it might provide the opportunity to trade for Sharp and Barker in Chicago (who are looking for some financial wiggle room) for the 2 Kostitsyn brothers, Halak, and either a 1rst or 2nd round pick.
If all this would pan out, then the Habs lineup would look like this: Sharp - Gomez - Gionta Cammalleri - Forsberg - Horton Latendresse - Lapierre - Moen Pacioretty - Metropolit - Laraque Stewart - Chipchura
Spacek - Barker Mara - O'Byrne Gill - Gorges Bergeron
Price Sanford
This would give Montreal a team that would be able to compete on any given night with any given team...and if Price can perform slightly above average, may even mean a deep run into the playoffs. Even when Markov would come back from his injury in either late-February or early-March, the Habs could absorb what is left of his contract without having to do anything besides send someone to the minors.
Is this scenario plausible?...no...but is it possible?...unfortunately the answer is still no. Especially since Montreal isn't a Stanley Cup contender even with Markov in the lineup...and without him they may not even be a playoff team this year...but a Hab fan can dream.

Everyone wants to blame Price for his play, I say bull Shit.
Aside the third goal none of the goals were his fault. The defence is so *****ing pathetic its unbelievable. Oh ya good job Bob signing bergeron who most people thaught was a steal for 750 000. Ya ok balls. This guy is the crapiest defenceman i have ever seen. Jaro spacek 3.8 million dollars a year. #5 years old and 4 *****ing chins, what signing. Hal Gill 2.5 or is it 2.25, wtv doesnt matter all i know is he at least gives the puck away 2 times every game. Paul Mara, i really dont have much to say about him hes not playing bad. Gorges is meh same as last year thats what your pretty much gonna get from him.
Missing markov makes a hole in the defence thats foresure no doubt but god dammit comeon. Can anyone of the *****ing defencemen step it up for *****s sakes.
Which brings me to the forwards. If Gionta, Gomez, and camelleri don't score a goal this team is toast. Andrei kostisyn, Don't know whats happening with him but if he keeps playing like he is keep him on that foruth line. Now lets look at the second line. Must strike so much fear into the opposition when they see plecky( who is playing damn good so I'll give him his credit) and his wingers being latendresse and lapierre. Wow what a second line unbelievable. Latendresse is a *****ing choke artist all those people who say give him his chance give him is chance are as delusional as guillaumes skill. He just sucks. Lapierre is not a second line guy hes a third line guy. My props go out to Metropolit and moen. How would this team be if these guys wouldn't be there on our third line. Pacioretty has been showing some signs of life and so has Chipchura but aside from that this team is toast
So in conclusion this team is at best an 7th or 8th place team at best and Bob Gainey *****ed this team over for the years to come. 5 year plan my ass Bob
