Is Kaberle for Sharpe back on?

Trade Rumors Thomas Kaberle 2 -Mark Goldman/Icon SMIleafy writes "Kris Versteeg also possible trade bait for Hawks

After being selected the NHL's first star this past week, it seems a good bet everyone in the hockey world is aware that Tomas Kaberle is having a terrific season.

Several sources are reporting that trade talk between Chicago and Toronto could be back on, and the Hawks may again be targeting the Leaf star blue liner.

It's believed that the Hawks might be offering C Patrick Sharp, who was rumored to be Leaf bound during the summer.

Another Blackhawks player who could be Leaf bound is RW Kris Versteeg.

It's well known the Blackhawks have to make some moves to keep their cap numbers balanced in order to re-sign Patrick Kane, Jonathan Toews, and Duncan Keith.

I am not trying to sound like an ass here, but is that really enough for Kabby? Especially the way he is playing? Not to mention this will not solve all of Chicago's cap problems I am sure. Campbell needs to go I would assume, but he I am wrong several times a day. So I ask this to Leaf fans, what is a fair trade for kabby at this point? And, that is only IF and a big If he would even move.

This trade makes absolutely no sense unless Campbell was moved.
While I would love to get Sharp, not only would it not be enough but they couldnt afford him with Campbell already their.
I would say Kaberle for Sharp and Barker/Byfuglien/Beach
I want no part of Versteeg, last season was an anomaly.

just Sharp is not enough.... maybe Sharp and another young player would do it. Kyle Beach would be a huge chip for the Leafs.

this lets Brian Burke save some face..... even though the leafs lose top high 1st rounders, Leafs would have a solid prospect pool to work with.

Kadri, Sharp, Schenn, Beach, Stalberg, Bozak, Gustavsson..... seems decent

HOW ABOUT THOMAS KABERLE FOR KRIS VERSTEEG AND PATRICK SHARP?

THAT WOULD ALLOW THE HAWKS TO SIGN KANE, TOEWS AND KEITH, AND WOULD GIVE THE LEAFS TWO PLAYERS CAPABLE OF PLAYING ON A TOP LINE WITH KESSEL, EVEN THOUGH SHARP IS ALSO A RIGHT WINGER, THEY COULD AT LEAST HAVE TWO SOLID TOP LINES.

Okay I may be an idiot but I don't think now is the time for either of these teams. The Hawks have until June 31st to move some stuff around, and that likely will be Campbell, IF the can get him to waive his NMC. Sharp will likely be gone as well, but this only saves them 11.04 million minus whatever they're taking on, which will be enough, if they're lucky, to sign two of the trio. That means they still have to move a sizable chunk to move. Now I'm getting way ahead of myself here.

Kaberle for Sharp. Straight up, NO WAY Burke is gonna do that. Kaberle is proving that he deserves to be on this team night in and night out. Kaberle is making them keep him right now. The Leafs can't just get rid of Kaberle for two forwards and a draft pick, which is what I think the minimum would be, because that leaves a massive whole on our back end, one that Kaberle has filled since he joined the team. The role of the puck moving defenceman is vital to the leafs right now, I think it would be really dumb to get rid of Kaberle.

Okay I was looking at some numbers for the leafs. Next year, here is a list of our potential UFA's and their salaries right now. I rounded to make it easy.

Stempniak- 2.5 million
Ponikarovsky- 2.1 million
Stajan- 1.75 million
Primeau- 1.4 million
Mayers- 1.3
Wallin-  800,000
Mitchell- 487,500
Van Ryn- 2.9 million
Exelby- 1.4 million
Toskala- 4 million

That's some hefty cash, especially when you think that on some nights, we don't play Toskala, Mayers, Primeau, Van Ryn or Exelby. That's 11 MILLION sitting on the bench or in the crowd. Now I think we can expect a guy like stempniak back at a reduced rate, or, if his numbers and play continue to be excellent, I'd just keep his contract. Ponikarovsky and Stajan, about the same. The only player I would retain from the remainder of that list would be Mitchell. What does everyone else think?

Ummm, No...

Kaberle is a centerpiece for the Leafs. Why would he be traded to fill out depth positions? Kaberle is a one man power play unit, Sharp is a great second line winger. Kaberle is an perennial allstar, Sharp is a Nathan Horton type player that may flirt with a breakout season but not likely to achieve one, let alone be consistent.

We already have a glut of ok forwards and one star up front. We don't need Sharp + another Sharp like piece (late first rounder,Versteeg, ect...). Why would we target Chicago's excess salaries with our best player and contract.

The notion that Kaberle should be traded for the sake of trading him needs to be let go. Burke should wait for someone to overpay, perhaps at the draft or look to extend him next year.

The other problem is that we're in desperate need of making a UFA splash this off season. Kaberle makes the Leafs an attractive work environment, Sharp would make us look like the Panthers.

Ok, I have been thinking about this....what about Kaberle, Finger and toskala for Campbell, Sharp, Beech, Skille, Huet  and a 1st & 2nd. We would get extra taking on the anchor contracts. It is way out there and is a huge cap hit but by relieving the hawks of their two worst contracts we get rewarded highly.

The only reason I wouldn't do this is if Kaberle agrees to sign a long-term extension to finish his career in Toronto that is easy on the cap. Puck moving defencemen like him usually play well, even in their late thirties (Lidstrom) so we wouldn't have to worry about a sudden drop in production.

If he doesn't want to, then we have to trade him. We can't let him go for nothing. Versteeg + Sharp + 2nd or prospect and I would do it. Kaberle has been a big part of our team for years, but if he wants a huge raise, the last thing we need is to get caught up in a bidding war. Plus, we have White and Gunnarsson to fill the void. They aren't in the same league as Kaberle, but they have showcased skill at puck moving, and both are still improving their game.

Versteeg and Sharp would both easily fall into our top-6 forwards, and allow us to trade away some expiring contracts that aren't needed anymore for picks.

If the Leafs decide to trade Kaberle, they need to get draft picks back.  This team is no where close to contending, and draft picks are the best routes to go.  I figured they would have dealt him in the off season when his no trade clause non existent.  Originally, I figured Burke to have erred on not doing a deal during the summer, but his excellent play early on has made his value sky rocket, but his NTC might hand cuff them.
If the leafs, Kaberle, and a mystery third team agree to a deal, atleast 2 first rounders should be secured.
For the Leafs sake, I hope he doesn't pull a Sundin, and cost them a lot, just to have him leave. His value will drop dramatically next summer with only one year, and may be forced into trading him, to get atleast something for him, to save losing him for nothing after next season

I wonder why these rumors that dont make sense keep coming up.  As far as Chicago is concerned for THIS season...is that they have a possible championship team and might only need finer tinkering to cement that fact.

Now if Chicago was looking PAST this season they are obviously looking at un-screwing their cap situation.  With that said I dont think you can have Kaberle, Campbell, Barker, Keith AND Seabrook on your blueline next year thats ridiculous.

In ANY TOR/CHI trade scenarios if it involves Kaberle there HAS to be one of those defenceman coming back, I have NO idea why the writer states the extra player ontop of Sharp should be Versteeg??  Makes no sense.

If I was Stan Bowman I would go into the playoffs this year with the team I currently have and then see how far they go in.  There doing OK right now but keep in mind they are short Jon Toews AND Marion Hossa.  When those two come back WATCHOUT!

Even if they are dealing from a position of weakness next off-season I personally think its worth taking a shot at the cup this year with that roster they currently have.  The roster will clearly be downgraded next year due to their cap so take a chance at winning at least!!

Though's on tonight's game:

Goaltending - Holy shit!

Defense:

Ian White - brutal first period. Can be singled out as the cause of the two Carolina goals. But played great in the 2nd and 3rd, although I was nervous when he was out there, he picked it up.

Beauchemin and Komisarek - they just keep getting better and better. Komisarek was an animal tonight, Frankie was very solid except for his soft pass behind the net, which led to his having to take a penalty. 1 gaff aside, he was fine.

Kaberle - First team All-Star

Luke Schenn - great game, really improving.

Forwards -

They were kind of listless tonight. I thought this was the worst game they played during our 6 game pt streak.

Phil Kessel was not as dynamic as he was vs. Tampa, but 2 good back checks (one of which he caused the turnover) and a couple nice plays.

John Mitchell was solid but I actually liked Stajan better with Kessel. Didn't think I would but thats my assesment through 2 games.

Jason Blake was an animal. Easily our best player (besides maybe the Monster). Blake has been dynamite for about 5 straight games now.

Stajan was good too, everyone else was kind of quiet. Grabovski made some noise out there, he was okay but too many turnovers, blind passes, and soft plays along the boards.

Primeau's best game as a Leaf, and he didnt really do much, but still his best game regardless.

Unless we could get the 2010 pick back from Boston than I wouldnt trade Kaberle, not yet anyways. If he is still a top 5 scorer amongst defensemen by the trade deadline, than maybe we can get another ridiculous deal like what was offered too us a few years back. If we trade Kaberle and get Sharp back, we would have another goal scorer, not a playmaker, and we would lose all hope of keeping Hall out of Boston.

I think Brian Burke's biggest task is eliminating the contracts of Jason Blake and Jeff Finger before the beginning of next season. Trading or waiving these two plugs would give the Leafs 7 million in cap space.

I think the Toronto Maple Leafs should look into signing both Patrick Marleau and Marc Savard. This move would help round out the Leafs top lines.

Victor Stalberg - Marc Savard - Phil Kessel
Patrick Marleau - Mikhail Grabovski - Niklas Hagman

Though Francois Beauchemin has been playing better as of late, I do not believe he's the right fit for our top 4. Trading Beauchemin for a draft pick and signing Dan Hamhuis, Paul Martin, Anton Volchenkov, Rostislav Klesla or Carlo Colaiacovo would improve the Leafs defense substantially.
