Maple Leafs interested in Nathan Horton

Maple Leaf Trade Rumors Nathan Horton - Panthers - ICON SMIglotz_99 writes "thefourthperiod.com is reporting:

The Toronto Maple Leafs appear to be combing through the NHL for a trade partner or two, as GM Brian Burke looks for ways to bolster his roster. It's been widely reported that the Leafs would like to move forward Jason Blake and goalie Vesa Toskala at some point this season, while various rumors have also linked Alexei Ponikarovsky and Jeff Finger to the trade block.  Burke is believed to be looking for a gritty top-six forward to play alongside Phil Kessel and according to one published report, the Leafs are interested in Florida Panthers forward Nathan Horton.

Horton, who has apparently caught the interest of the Toronto Maple Leafs, has picked up his game of late, picking up nine points in his last seven games. If the Leafs want Horton, though, the Sun reports the Panthers would have to take Jason Blake and his $4 million cap hit back as part of a deal. The Anaheim Ducks, Montreal Canadiens and Nashville Predators are also rumored to be interested in Horton.

Horton has been unhappy playing in Flordia for some time now, and through 15 games this season has 4 goals and 7 assists for 11 pts.  He has 4 yrs left on his contract paying him 4 mil per season on average. "

Well Horton did make this list of players on the block:

I like Nathan Horton, but I don't know if there's much truth to the Leafs wanting to get rid of Jason Blake, he's their best winger, after Kessel.

The Ottawa Sun also mentioned Rotislav Olesz is also believed to be on the trade block and the Panthers are looking for a big center in return.

As a Leafs fan, I would like to see Horton in Toronto. But could careless if they do trade for him really. I only say this because it is going to take more than Blake and Stajan/Tlusty to get him,I think. Besides the way Blake is playing I would prefer they keep him. I guess it just depends on the price, and if they have what Fla wants back?

4 leafs on the outs:

stajan
toskala
mayers
exelby

only stajan and exelby would have some value. mayers is useless and they have rosehill to play that 4th line role. rosehill too can be an emergency defenceman as he was converted to forward by the leafs.

hopefully the leafs can grab a couple of decent picks, maybe a late 2nd, perhaps some 3rds for exelby and stajan.

toskala couldnt be given away....unless we take back bad salary.

I believe that the Leafs are interested, but Florida isn't interested in any of the junk that Toronto is trying to unload. Other than Gustavson, Kadri, Schenn, Kaberle and Kessel (none of which are likely moving) the leafs have nothing to offer. They don't even have any decent picks to even make it tempting.

Its not like Horton is a necessary piece Burke should obsess about, he'd be nice in the top six but I'm feeling pretty meh at the idea of trading for him. Put Tulsty and Blake on the table then leave it at that.

On another note, should Finger get a shot to force Beauchemin off the team? I thought Beachemin would be great this year but he's struggled and Finger has looked solid in his limited role. I realize Beachemin eats more minutes and has more responsibilities but I'm not sure casting away Finger is a given.

Well if the rumors are true (who knows really when it comes from the 4th period) Id be glad to aquire a top 6 centerman with size and about to enter his prime at 24....but at what cost??

I would give them Jason Blake and a couple prospects or late picks.  Nothing more.  Nathan Horton is a career 25-30 goal scorer and so is Blake, however he is roughly a decade younger and plays the wing.

So the trade off should come at the combination of 2-3 prospects and late picks.  Id be comfterbal giving up...

FIRST: Jason Blake

ONE of: Jiri Tlusty, Tyler Bozak, Mikhail Stefanovich

PLUS 1-2 of: Jimmy Hayes, Dale Mitchell, Juraj Mikus, Carl Gunnarson, Chris Didomenico, Phil Oreskovich, Kenny Ryan, late picks 4th/5th

Id personally like to keep Kadri (obvi), Blacker, Stalberg, Hanson and Reimer (for goalie depth).

- Alexei Ponikarovsky and Matt Stajan are dealt before the trade deadline
- Brian Burke aquires a top 6 forward. ie. Nathan Horton, Alexander Frolov, Ollie Jokinen etc.
- Jonas Gustavsson plays over 50 games and is runner-up for the Calder Trophy
- Phil Kessel scores over 25 goals (I predict 28) and finishes second in team points with 60pts in 70 games.
- Vesa Toskala gets injured again
- Tomas Kaberle finishes with over 60pts and he finishes the year as a Leaf.
