Center Nylander is placed on waivers

Capitals Nylander - Capitals - ICONSMI
Tarik El-Bashir

Michael Nylander was placed on waivers Saturday by the Washington Capitals, a move that could expedite a resolution to an awkward situation that has hung over the team since training camp.

If Nylander is claimed, the team that picks him up will assume the remainder of his $5.5 million salary (and pay the Capitals a waiver fee of just more than $3,000). If Nylander is not claimed, he will remain on Washington's roster, but the path will be cleared for the Capitals to loan the 37-year-old center to a team outside of the NHL.

Nylander has a "no-move clause" in his contract and must approve any transaction. He has been on the trading block since early last season and has not suited up for the Capitals since the playoffs after falling out of favor with the coaching staff and management.

The Capitals are not believed to have an agreement in place to trade Nylander within the NHL or loan him to a team outside of the league at this time, a team official said. Nylander could also accept an assignment to the minor leagues.

If he is placed on reentry waivers, a team will claim him I think. There are just too many teams screaming for offence for someone not to give this guy a crack.

Well if there is a 'No Move Clause' in his contract, then he can't be sent down to the minors. I realize he was just in the minors on a conditioning stint, but this would be a different story, if he were to clear waivers he couldn't be sent down without agreeing to it, and would not be eligible for re-entry waivers.

If its a typo, and he actually has a 'no trade clause' then he could be moved down.

I really dont get the appeal for this guy AT ALL!!

He hasnt put up decent points since 2006/07 with the Rangers, is a collective -19 since joining an awesome Capitals team...like really if u cant mesh with Ovechkin, Backtrom or Semin...u suck...

Not to mention his cap hit nearly 5 million this year and next.  Seriously if Jason Blake's contract is unmovable so is Nylander's.  And Blake is twice the player Nylander is which is sad to say.

He is old, washed up, over paid...WHO would take him seriously??

He has CLEARLY lost a huge step if the likes of Brooks Laich and Brendan Morrison can overtake him for center jobs.  If the Capitals took a chance on Morrison who wasnt even sure if hed get another NHL contract then they must know something in Nylander that he's a bum and isnt worth the investment.  In respect to Morrison however, he is playing better this year but the Caps took a chance on him for sure.
