 | HTR Feature Article: Whispers heard on possible Giguere trade |

For those that missed it in print or online, Register columnist Randy Youngman reports that there have been preliminary discussions between the Ducks and Toronto involving a possible trade that would send goaltender Jean-Sebastien Giguere to the Maple Leafs. jiggy
The Maple Leafs would like someone to mentor goaltender Jonas Gustavsson, and the Ducks would likely have to take on Vesa Toskala’s $4 million salary, Youngman writes.
Speculation about Giguere going to Toronto has been thrown about ever since former Ducks general manager Brian Burke and former Ducks goaltending coach Francois Allaire re-united in Toronto this summer.
Meahwhile, Giguere is recovering from a groin-muscle injury and could be available on the upcoming Ducks’ road trip.

Re: Whispers heard on possible Giguere trade (Score: 1) by nordiques100 on Monday, November 09 (User Info | Send a Message) | the ducks would need to take back both toskala and finger to get it done. that isnt much of a money savings for the ducks, which would be the whole purpose of the deal.
the leafs could just send them the expiring contract of toskala, who would then back up hiller, but to take on 13 mil in salary and a 6 mil cap hit, the leafs would need some incentive.
i just dont think the ducks would be all that willing and would definitely want a valued return for the former conn winner.
the leafs would have space though, if toskala was part of the deal. with van ryn gone for good, that freed up 3 mil in cap space already.
i just dont think they will give in and give up a young player or even an established young player to get giggy.
the wings are another team. and may have enough cap space with lilja, franzen and williams on LTIR. they are a combined 6 plus mil cap hit.
however they would have serious issues next season.

There is no benefit for the Leafs to aquire Giguere. We are taking on some cap this season and pretty much taking away any raise Gustavsson SHOULD earn for next year.
No point for the Leafs to get him unless we get something extra in return from Anaheim. Plus isnt anyone worried about this guys injury troubles??
I agree with Nords...trade him to Detroit! Id assume Giguere would lift his NTC to go to a contender wouldnt he??

This guy is such a great 4th liner. He throws huge hits. He'd be like a better Colton Orr on the 4th line. And the two of them together would be great.
I'd take Mair over Primeau. |

Leafs don't need to spend 6 mil in capspace next year on Giguere... that money is MUCH BETTER SPENT ON A FORWARD.

Re: Whispers heard on possible Giguere trade (Score: 1) by DannyLeafs (dude@dudemail.com) on Tuesday, November 10 (User Info | Send a Message) | Depending on the details of this deal it could be good or bad. I wouldn't particularly like a deal that was just Giguere for Toskala straight up but there are some interesting scenarios.
First off, Anaheim has two first round picks this year due to the Pronger deal, and the Leafs have none, so if there was a way that the leafs could recoup a first round pick in this deal, then it becomes a little more plausible.
Also, I mentioned in a post yesterday that I think the leafs would have a hard time moving Jeff Finger, however if they can swing a deal where they send Toskala and Finger to Anaheim for Giguere, the Leafs cap situation wouldn't be so bad. They would essentially only take on an additional 2.5 million in cap space for next season, but they also wouldn't need to sign a back-up for Gustavsson. A good back-up goalie will cost roughly 1-1.5 million (I am thinking Biron type back-up that is capable of playing a fair number of games to take pressure off a young goalie). With this in mind, this makes Giguere's contract much more digestable. Also, when you consider the fact that Giguere's contract is up next year, the Leafs will have saved cap space for the following year as Finger's contract is good for two years after this one. Finally, Giguere would be a great mentor of the next two seasons for Gustavsson, and next season would probably make an attractive rental to a solid team with goal tending issues heading into the playoffs.
So here are some trade scenarios that I believe make this deal make sense:
to TOR: G-Giguere
to ANA: G-Toskala D-Finger
Toronto gets a mentor for Gustavsson, a solid back up option, and is able to move a contract that was considered to be otherwise unmoveable. Anaheim would get 2.5 million in cap relief for next season, and could actually use Finger in a top four role. While his 3.5 million contract will still make him overpaid, it won't be by near as much as paying 6 million for a back up goaltender.
Scenario 2:
Tor: Giguere 1st Round pick
ANA: Toskala Ponikarovsky/Stajan
Toronto could recoup a first round pick, and get a mentor for Gustavsson, while Anaheim adds some scoring depth and gets a huge amount of cap relief for this off-season. The downside of this deal is that Toronto would be sending the message that they are leaning more toward rebuilding over the next couple of years and aren't as concerned with being competitive over that time.
3rd Scenario (bit of a long shot best of both worlds as a leafs fan)
to Tor: G-Giguere 1st Round pick
To Ana: G-Toskala D-Finger F- Ponikarovsky/Stajan
It's funny that this deal is better for the leafs than the 2nd scenario and they actually give up more, but that's the way it works sometimes in the cap system. Personally I would trade both Ponikarovsky and Stajan to get this deal done. Many people will disagree, but I truly believe that both of these players are in their last season as Mapleleafs anway, so if it was possible to recoup a first rounder and get out of Finger's contract, then I would be all for it. If we held onto Ponikarovsky and Stajan and traded them at the deadline, it would probably be difficult to get as much as two 2nd round picks for them. Also, I don't really mind playing the rest of the season without Stajan and Ponikarovsky. I think both are solid and underrated 3rd line players, however the leafs roster and system are filled with solid 3rd line players, so I believe that in the long run the leafs would be better off making this deal and filling the void by giving some younger players (Bozak, Hanson, Stahlberg,Tlusty, and Kulemin) more NHL playing experience this season.
Either way, I know that the third scenario is extremely unlikely, and I am not saying that just any deal that involved Giguere going to Toronto and Toskala going to Anaheim makes sense, but I do beleive that there are some scenarios like the first two that I mention

Re: Whispers heard on possible Giguere trade (Score: 1) by BLUE_AND_WHITE (spam_proof_eh@hotmail.com) on Tuesday, November 10 (User Info | Send a Message) | Anaheim is in a much better position than people think. You have a stupid, but very talented (and driven) stanely cup winning goalie, and he's you're number 2 guy behind Hiller.
If Hiller gets injured or struggles, you have a guy who can come in and do as good a job as most goalies in the league (which come playoff time is HUGE, since so may teams go on fantastic runs with their backup).
There is 1 team that can really use a top notch goalie, and thats detroit. You have two more that could be looking for a goalie to put them over the edge (LA and Columbus).
The problem is, detroit is simply not in a position to take on his contract for next season, and theres one other strong goalie in the mix with a much more workable contract. He is Biron.
I think as far as goalies, Biron to detroit has to be seen as the sort of default expectation.
But If Quick and Mason don't turn up the heat, Anaheim could be in a strong position to deal Giguere or Hiller, and get a fair amount of youth out of it.
Anaheim is not going to spill a strong asset for Toskala. It just won't happen. |
