 Peter Mueller to Leafs?

Maple Leaf Trade Rumors blankglotz_99 writes "The Phoenix Coyotes remain on the lookout for a veteran defenseman, but the blueline isn't the only area the club is concerned about.
Coyotes GM Don Maloney has been searching for a new rearguard for several weeks. With more than $27 million in available cap space, the Coyotes have more than enough room to add players, but their confusing ownership situation may prevent them from making key acquisitions. Up front, Maloney wouldn't mind adding another top-six goal-scorer and it has been widely reported that young center Peter Mueller could be made available.

(source: thefourthperiod.com)

So how about a deal at the trade deadline that sent Kaberle to the Coyotes for Peter Mueller and a draft pick.

Phoenix is looking for a veteran blueliner and Kaberle is defintely one of the best on the market. Although he is a free agent at the end of this year, this could a plus for the Coyotes as they are avoiding any long term deals given their team's uncertain future.

Mueller is defintely a player Burke would be interested in. The 21 year old American is a finese player who combined with his size could become a guy who could centre the 1st line. The Leafs are also looking to recoup some of the draft picks they gave up in the Kessel deal.

What do you guys think?

Mueller has struggled this year, but is a player who had 22 goals and 54 pts in his rookie year, so i wouldn't be too worried about it.

One other point is Kaberle still has a no trade contract and would have to accept any deal.

Flub, its not like Kaberle is going to waive to play for the Yotes anyway.  If Mueller isn't good enough for Phoenix, he won't survive Toronto.

Kaberle for OLM? I'd take a serious look at.

With the way Mueller has been playing, I would want at least a 1st rounder, and probably a 2nd, coming with Mueller to Toronto to give up Kaberle for this season and next.

As for prospects, I think the Leafs could do better than Mueller anyway. He's more of a playmaking center, but is he going to be more than 2nd liner at best?

Don't say, "he would do well with Kessel", because basically, ANYONE would do well with Kessel on their wing.

Maybe the Loafs could add to Kaberle, and convince PHX to part with Kyle Turris in the AHL....

Mueller put up over 50 points as a 19 year old rookie, which is impressive. But he hasn't been nearly as productive ever since. I was talking with some people about this, and it can attributed to the fact that he played top line in his rookie year because there was no Jokinen, or Lombardi, or any other centre to play with Doan, and Doan had a monster year that season.

I would never move Kaberle for Mueller. That would be considered the worst trade since Rask for Raycroft.

I would trade the following defensmen for Mueller: Ian White or Jeff Finger. That's it. One of those two for Mueller would be a good deal, anyone else would be too risky.

If they are looking for a top 6 player why would there be a trade involving Kaberle....  We all know Tkab is our best tradable asset but this would be a stupid trade...Im not a fan of trading him actually and with Burke's rapid version of a rebuild I doubt he wants to part with his all-star defenceman.  Not to mention Kaberle ISNT a UFA and cant be dealt during the season without lifting his NTC which he wont.

If they are looking for a top 6 scorer the answer might be Ponikarovski.  And this is in the event the Leafs are still a while away from making the playoffs.  Poni IMO is in Burke's rebuild plans and would be one of very few UFAs to re-sign with the Leafs.  However if the deal could go down I believe it would resemble this:

To Phoenix: Alexei Ponikarovski, Garnett Exelby
To Toronto: Peter Mueller, 2nd-3rd round pick

Both players are UFAs so that takes care of any iffy financials for next year.  It also addresses Phoenix's need for a top 6 forward and adds some defence depth which IMO the Coyotes are only 5 deep on defence (Jovo, Aucoin, Michalek, Yandle, Vandermeer).

I don't want to see Kaberle go, and definitely not to Pheonix for Mueller. Kaberle doesn't want to leave, and definitely WILL NOT go to Phoenix for Mueller. No way does he waive his NTC for Pheonix. SO. If the Leafs are serious about Mueller, they're gonna have to go another route. Obviously, I'm sure Tlusty was the best option, but he's obviously no longer available. So it becomes someone else, and I don't know who that would be, I'm not that familiar with the Leafs roster and prospects as others.

so the leafs have actually won this season? how did that happen?

kessel cracks when the attention is on him. i think its fitting that the two bruins players that have their names mentioned whenever kessel is mentioned arguably had the best two games: savard and krejci.

rask is already an elite goalie. bergeron is back, better than ever, and should be on team canada, unless yzerman resorts back to his idiotic ways. mark stuart was an absolute beast tonight, and komisarek was his usual awful self being a goon. stuart has been better than komisarek all year, yet everyone says put komi in there in the shudown role. why? because he's a leaf. of course komisarek will be on the team because burke is an idiot.

so close to 3rd last leafs fans! sooooo close! maybe next week? oh, nope you play us again.

at this rate....the bruins should win the series vs the leafs 6-0 and outscore them 36 - 12.
