 Leafs Turn Around

Maple Leafs blankzambo writes "After everyone has been doubting Brian Burke saying that it was useless bringing him in and that he did nothing for this team, and yes they traded their 1st round & 2nd round picks of this year & 1st round pick next year to the boston bruins for young sniper phil kessel, which can potentially be tyler seguin, taylor hall or cam fowler, but hold on. Yesterday Burke did the unexpected, after a horrible loss to the Vancouver Canucks the night before, which they were winning and gave up a 3 goal lead, he knew they had to make a change. Burke yesterday stated that he is now open for business.

Yesterday Burke shipped Forwards Nik Hagman, Matt Stajan, Jamal Mayers, & Ian White to the Calgary Flames for star D-man Dion Phanuef, F Fredrik Sjostrom & young D-man prospect Keith Aulie.

Lets look at this trade:  To Calgray: Jamal Mayers- useless, he wanted out and we were expecting him gone so no loss.
Matt Stajan- good player, good offensively but we knew he was going to because of the recent trade rumors for the past month, and hes a UFA at the end of the season.
Nik Hagman- wasnt expecting him going, kinda sad hes going, liked him alot, was a hard working forward who can score, bye Hagman gonna miss you.
Ian White- wasnt expecting him going either, feelings same like Nik Hagman, but Ian White was the only consistent Leaf this season and i was expecting him to re-sign, but its business so gonna miss u 2 White.

for

To Toronto: Dion Phanuef- a good skating, hard hitting defenseman who is good at both ends of the ice, and has a hard slap shot. He has been letting some people down lately but he can start fresh with Toronto and show he is an all-star defenseman.
Fredrik Sjostrom- A Jamal Mayers type player, but I think hes better, not as tough as him but works hard in the corners and is fast and if he goes hard to the net he can score.
Keith Aulie- Won a gold medal with team Canada in the world juniors last year and is a tall physical and offensive player. For his size he can skate well, and I think he will be a great asset to the leafs future.

Team who won this trade: I think both teams won, but for now Calgary did because they needed offense fast, but for the future the Leafs won because both Phaneuf and Aulie are young, hard working defenseman, and could help the Leafs win games in the future.

The other trade- The Leafs shipped Goaltender Vesa Toskala and veteran forward Jason Blake to the Ducks for Goaltender JS Giguere. I thought the Leafs also acquired a 1st or 2nd round pick? Anyone want to update me on that?

Lets look at this trade- To Anaheim: Vesa Toskala- struggled the past few seasons and suffered from many injuries and we desprately needed a new goalie. Sorry to say this but im happy hes gone.

Jason Blake- Put up numbers last year, but this year didnt put up as much numbers at all, and hes getting old so we needed to ship him and to get salary off of our backs. Also happy ges gone.

To Toronto: JS Giguere- A back up this season to Jonas Hiller and has failed to show he has earned the number one spot, but hes my favorite goalie and I think he can bounce back here in Toronto and he has been re-united with goaltender coach Francois Alaire- dont know how to spell it, and can easily get back to the goalie he once was.

Winners of trade: Leafs if Giguere can improve and show that he can be a number one goalie, and especially if the leafs did get a 1st or 2nd round draft pick back also in return.

Leafs depth chart as of now:

*call up Stalberg- speed and big body infront of the net.
forwards:

Ponikarovsky- Bozak- Kessel
Kulemin- Mitchell- Stalberg
Sjostrom- Wallin- Stempniak
Rosehill- Primeau- Orr

*Grabovski- injured.

defenseman:

Kaberle- Phanuef
Komisarek- Schenn
Gunnarsson- Beauchemin

goaltending:

Gustavsson
Giguere

Now lets look at the rest of the UFA's on the Leafs who are likely to be traded
Alexei Ponikarovsky- A good player, put up solid numbers on a slumping Leafs team and could attrack a 2nd rounder and maybe a young prospect? I think he will be delt before the trade freeze or at the deadline.
ex. of trades: to nashville- poni, to toronto- 2nd round pick & 5th round pick
or to phoenix- poni, exelby & Hayes/Ryan, to toronto: 2nd round pick, Peter Mueller & defenseman.

Lee Stempniak- A good offensive player, can make the pass and can score. Hes put up decent numbers this year, but I think he will be re-signed but if not here are some trades:
ex. to L.A.- Lee Stempniak, Tomas Kaberle, Garnet Exelby & a young prospect
for to Toronto: Alexander Frolov,a 1st round pick and a young prospect- Teubert or Schenn.
or
to Edmonton- Lee Stempniak & Finger/Exelby
for
to Toronto- Andrew Cogliano & a draft pick

Primeau- a solid 4th liner, who can forcheck and works hard in the corners. He wont bring in much but if not traded will be let go at the end of the season or even re-signed because Burke likes him, but if traded:
ex. to Pittsburgh- primeau, to toronto- 5th rounder

Wallin- let go after this season for sure, Not showing anything to prove he can play in the NHL.

Van Ryn- let go after this season, too injury prone.

Garnet Exelby- Requested he will be traded and Burke said hes not done so there gives us a hint. He will be dealt before the trade freeze or at the deadline.
ex. to Chicago- Exelby, Ponikarovsky, & a prospect
for to toronto- Sopel & Sharp

Jeff Finger- Not a UFA at the end of the season, but I think he will be dealt. I dont have any possible trades for him because I dont know any teams that want or interested in him.

Kaberle- Not a UFA as well at the end of the season, but after acquiring Phanuef, the Leafs now have Beauchemin, Komisarek, Schenn, & Kaberle as top 4 defenseman & gunnarsson in the mix, the Leafs can trade away Kaberle which the Leafs can get a good package in return.
ex. of trades: to L.A. Kaberle & Poni
for to Toronto: 1st round pick, Stoll, & Schenn/Teubert
or
To Boston: Kaberle
for to Toronto; Colborne, 1st round pick & roster player: Hunwick or Stuart.

PLAYER NEWS
Tomas Kaberle, D
2010/09/08:  Tomas Kaberle has denied that a rift exists between himself and head coach Ron Wilson. "It's very clear to me, and (Wilson) ... There's no issue," Kaberle said. "My dad, I love my dad and he watches a lot of games and he can say what he wants. It's his opinion but I don't agree with it." A report out of the Czech Republic had Frantisek Kaberle Sr. saying that his son and Wilson cannot co-exist in Toronto due to differing styles, but nobody on the Leafs appears to buying that assumption. Kaberle also added that he will not be asking GM Brian Burke for a trade. (Source: Toronto Star)
Jean-Sebastien Giguere, G
2010/09/08:  The number one job in Toronto is Jean-Sebastien Giguere's to lose heading into 2010-11. "I think the No. 1 goalie is Giggy, but he has to perform," coach Ron Wilson said. "Whoever plays best is going to play, but I envision it being Jiggy right now." That would make Jonas Gustavsson the backup going into the season, but he should still see his fair share of starts as the two of them rotated games when Giguere arrived from Anaheim in 2009-10. Giguere posted a .916 save percentage and a 2.49 GAA in 15 games with the Maple Leafs last year. (Source: Toronto Sun)
Tomas Kaberle, D
2010/09/08:  Toronto bench boss Ron Wilson will sit down with Tomas Kaberle soon to iron out any possible ripples in their relationship before the season starts. "My relationship is not going to change," Wilson said. "We're going to try to figure out what's been said. We will sit down either at the end of the week or early next week and have a heart-to-heart talk and see what the issues are if there are any." Kaberle's father said last month that his son and coach Wilson are on rocky terms, but as usual the defenseman has remained silent on the issue. (Source: Toronto Sun)
Fredrik Sjostrom, LW/RW
2010/09/02:  Fredrik Sjostrom might be available at the start of training camp after undergoing a shoulder operation this off-season. He is reportedly ahead of schedule in his recovery, but Toronto GM Brian Burke said the team would not rush him back before he is ready. We'll keep you posted on his status, but he has no fantasy value. (Source: Ottawa Sun)
Christian Hanson, RW/C
2010/08/31:  The Toronto Maple Leafs have agreed to terms with restricted free agent Christian Hanson. Hanson scored two goals and registered five assists in 31 games last season. He should battle for a spot on Toronto's opening day roster. (Source: Sportsnet.ca)
Clarke MacArthur, LW
2010/08/30:  Leafs GM Brian Burke expects Clarke MacArthur to spend a significant amount of time on one of Toronto's top two lines. MacArthur inked a one-year/$1.1 million deal with the Maple Leafs after Atlanta walked away from an arbitrator awarded one-year/$2.4 million deal. He scored 16 goals and 35 points in 81 games last season, but he still has some offensive upside. If he spends the majority of the season serving as a top-six forward, we think he can score 20-25 goals and 40-50 points. (Source: Toronto Star)
Clarke MacArthur, LW
2010/08/28:  The Toronto Maple Leafs have signed forward Clarke MacArthur to a one-year deal. The contract is worth $1.1 million. Last season MacArthur scored 16 goals and 19 assists in 81 games (split between Buffalo and Atlanta). He will contend for a top-six forward spot withe Maple Leafs. He will be valuable in fantasy pools if he can secure a spot on the Leafs' power play. (Source: TSN.ca)
Matt Lashoff, D
2010/08/27:  Matt Lashoff will join a crowded blueline in Toronto this season after being dealt to the Maple Leafs on Friday for minor-leaguers Alex Berry and Stefano Giliati. He played the majority of last season with the Tampa's AHL affiliate in Norfolk, where he posted eight goals, 24 points and 105 penalty minutes in 68 games. Lashoff will likely begin the 2010-11 campaign in the minors with the Toronto Marlies. (Source: TSN.ca)
Jonas Gustavsson, G
2010/08/21:  Goalie Jonas Gustavsson is doing whatever he can to avoid the dreaded "sophomore jinx". "The second season can be dangerous because not everything is new and exciting in the same way it was (when you are a rookie)," Gustavsson said. "You sometimes have to fight a bit more to find that same energy." The Monster should be more relaxed this year, understanding exactly how North American hockey works. He could be a sleeper pick in fantasy if he can re-gain his Pre-NHL, European form. (Source: Toronto Sun)
Tomas Kaberle, D
2010/08/20:  The father of Maple Leafs' defenseman Tomas Kaberle believes his son will be traded during the 2010-11 season. "I think that during the course of the year he will be traded to another club," said Frantisek Kaberle Sr. "There is only one chance for Toronto to get something back in return for Tomas now. In my opinion, I can't see Tomas entering a new contract with the Toronto. Not if Ron Wilson continues to be employed there ... I cannot imagine how he will get along with coach Wilson, who relies primarily on aggression and stress. That's not Tomas, he's a technical type of defender." If Kaberle does end up being moved then he will have to go to Toronto GM Brian Burke himself with a list of teams because Burke has been steadfast in his claim that he will not ask the offensive rearguard to waive his no-trade clause. Look for stories like this to arise frequently throughout the year. (Source: Calgary Sun)

Not sure if Burke will move Kaberle now, him and Phaneuf will make a perfect pair for the leafs slumping powerplay. Looks like Beachemin will be the odd man out on this one, maybe him and poni for mueller and a 2nd?

I think Peter Mueller would be a great young prospect to centre the the 1st line with Kessel, he is having a rough season but is obvioussly unhappy playing in the hockey hotbed of phoenix, arizona.

Then in the offseason I would sign Raffi Torres, Colby Armstrong and Blair Betts

Kulemin - Mueller - Kessel
Torres  - Bozak - Armstrong
Sjostrom- Kadri - Stalberg
Rosehill - Betts - Orr

extras Mitchell, Hanson

Kaberle- Phanuef
Komisarek- Schenn
Gunnarsson- Beauchemin

Giguere and Gustavsson

These wouldnt be the exact lines but the team is defintly looking stronger for next season.

-Trade Garnet Exelby, Alexei Ponikrovsky and Lee Stempniak for Peter Mueller and a 2nd rd pick
-Trade Wayne Primeau for a 5th rd pick
-Send Jeff Finger to the minors to clear cap space

jeff finger can't possibly be traded. the leafs best options with him are either send him to the minors, or give away poni and finger to a team for free.

Rematch of the 2006 Cup Finals tonight. Battle of major super powers. Battle of ex-Leaf coaches.

Oilers vs Canes.

this mueller love affair is getting out of hand. He's not proving to be a real legit first line centre, or even an upgrade on Tyler Bozak.

On the other hand, now might be the time to buy low.

The Leafs current top 6 forwards, may possibly be the worst group ever to step foot onto an NHL ice surface.
