 | Trade Rumors: Bruins putting Thomas up for trade? |
BRUCE GARRIOCH, QMI Agency The Bruins might be on the verge of trying to deal Vezina Trophy winner Tim Thomas. While it would have been unthinkable when Thomas was signed to a four-year, $20-million (all terms US) contract extension last spring, two league executives confirmed to the Sun on Saturday that Bruins GM Peter Chiarelli has held talks with teams looking for goaltending help.
With the Bruins stuck in a miserable 10-game losing streak following Saturday’s 3-2 shootout loss to the Canucks, sources say Chiarelli hasn’t completely dismissed teams that have called about Thomas.
The sticking point with the 35-year-old Thomas, who has only one win in his last nine starts, is he has a no-movement clause in the deal he signed last April.
If Thomas were to waive his clause, his reasonable $5-million cap hit through the 2011-12 season would make him attractive on the trade market.
What isn’t so attractive is Thomas’ lacklustre 13-15-7 record, with a 2.52 GAA to go with a .915 save percentage.
Last season when he won the Vezina, Thomas posted a 36-11-7 record with a 2.10 GAA and a .933 save percentage.
The Blackhawks are likely to add a goalie by the March 3 trade deadline. They’d have to bury goalie Cristobal Huet and his $5.625-million cap hit in the minors to make a Thomas deal work, but there is a sense GM Stan Bowman is willing to do it if it improves Chicago’s chances to winning the Stanley Cup.
With Marty Turco set to become an unrestricted free agent this summer, the Stars could be in the market for Thomas as could the Blues and Blue Jackets, neither of whom have gotten the goaltending they expected this season.
Boston’s asking price would be steep. A goalie like Thomas should be able to fetch a top-six forward, top-four blueliner and a solid backup goalie.
Of course, the Bruins have to decide if goalie Tuukka Rask is ready to take over the No. 1 role, but they can’t afford to struggle much longer.

Re: Bruins putting Thomas up for trade? (Score: 1) by cam7777 on Sunday, February 07 (User Info | Send a Message) | | That's a hefty return for Thomas. If you get a top six forward for him, and a backup goalie, I think you're laughing. He is very good, but his age, contract, and the goalie market in general work against him here. |

Re: Bruins putting Thomas up for trade? (Score: 1) by leafmeister (ottawasenators@willneverwinthecup.com) on Sunday, February 07 (User Info | Send a Message) | Boston has to do something soon. Their offensive is simply pathetic. They havent been able to suffocate other teams defensively enough to get wins lately, and the goaltending is not what it used to be.
Poni could be available for both of Boston's 2010 2nds. Boston's 2010 2nd and Brad Marchand. Since we don't need to trade Ponikarovsky, and he would probably take a hometown discount to stick around next year, that would be the only thing I would accept from Boston.

Re: Bruins putting Thomas up for trade? (Score: 1) by Do_U_BeLeaf on Sunday, February 07 (User Info | Send a Message) | | I think Boston will have a REALLY hard time trying to move Tomas. Yes he had a great year last year but he also had one of the best defences in the leage. And before that he wasn't great. No-one is going to trade for a 35 year old strugling goalie who is owed 5 mill for 3 more years. And if someone was going to pay as much as the package put together they would go after price or halack. there are plenty of goalies available who are cheaper, younger, and more consistant. The only way they move him is if they take salery back. |

Re: Bruins putting Thomas up for trade? (Score: 1) by the_word on Sunday, February 07 (User Info | Send a Message) | Boston is better off tanking this season, they're not contenders, at best a darkhorse if they get healthy. If the free fall continues they could have two top five picks that would help them long term. Trading Thomas for the short term seems like a desperate move and not characteristic of Chiarelli. Though shedding his contract would be prudent as Rask is capable of getting the job done behind Boston's blueline. Trade Thomas for a 1st round pick, set up organizational depth that can sustain a contender for years to come.

Re: Bruins putting Thomas up for trade? (Score: 1) by reinjosh on Sunday, February 07 (User Info | Send a Message) | Goaltending is not their problem. Thomas and Rask is a beauty tandem to have. Combined, since January, the two have only gone 3 games where they have let in more than 3 goals. Both goalies have played pretty good. The biggest problem they have is scoring. This team needs to get a scoring winger. Recchi hasnt scored more than 28 goals since the 1997-1998 season and has been steadily declining in goal totals since then. Savard is a playmaker. So is Krejci. So is Bergeron. Ryder is your best option. And he has never scored more than 30. Sturm comes next at 28. You need a top line finisher to alleviate pressure from the rest of your players. A playmaker is only as good as his linemates. Savard can't perform miracles. No bbruins he cant make Ryder into a 50 goal scorer. Losing Kessel hurt and it hurt alot. Any level headed NHL fan can see that. If this team can't find a scoring winger somewhere, then its bound to its low scoring ways for a while.

Re: Bruins putting Thomas up for trade? (Score: 1) by cam7777 on Sunday, February 07 (User Info | Send a Message) | To TBL: Tim Thomas To BOS: Andrej Meszaros, 2nd in 2011
Boston gets a countryman to play with Chara. This would be a definitive guy to replace Morris with moving forward, and the B's also shed a million dollars, and take back a 2nd. If they would prefer even more cap-space, I suppose you could replace Andrej with Paul Ranger.
To PIT: Patrice Bergeron To BOS: Eric Tangradi, 1st in 2010, 3rd in 2010
I've talked about this one many times, but basically, Crosby gets a winger, and the team gets versatility, and a backup plan if they end up having to move Staal for a Gonchar replacement. Bergeron is basically insurance, and also leverage, for whatever ends up going down with Gonchar in the offseason.
To CAR: 6th overall (TOR), 11th overall (BOS), 2nd in 2011 (TBL) To BOS: 1st overall
So, Carolina robs Edmonton of their pick by winning the draft lottery. Carolina, more interested in restoring depth to their club, trades down for two top selections. Boston selects Taylor Hall first overall. This scenario is plausible so long as any team but Edmonton has the first overall pick. Obviously Edmonton would draft Hall regardless.

As for that trade value, I don't think so. A Thomas trade would be more of a salary dump situation. I don't think many teams would be interested in Thomas who has $15 mil left on 3 years.
I liked Cam's idea above about Meszaros for Thomas, that could make sense for Tampa Bay.
$9 mil of cap space for Thomas and Ryder is so bad. |

Re: Bruins putting Thomas up for trade? (Score: 1) by Tachmo on Sunday, February 07 (User Info | Send a Message) | Thomas will come around. The guy has never really gotten any respect. Yes he won the Vezina and made the All Star game, and named to the US Olympic team, so he finally got noticed. However, he has always been judged too quickly. People have always doubted him and he pulls through. Last year he was not even supposed to be the #1 guy as Fernandez was predicted to take that spot.
I think Boston should listen to offers for Thomas and if something comes about that makes sense they should act on it. Rask is young, and has no pressure. If Thomas is gone, I think that changes quickly and he may struggle too. I like the tandem and Thomas will start dominating again soon. |

GT: Tuuka Rask (1.3) - Alex Auld (1.3)
CAP HIT - 54.505 million
Dallas fixes their goaltending for the next few years, and presumably trades Turco for a separate return at the deadline. They swap Morrow for a much younger version of Morrow, and for that, they give up Neal and Auld for a high first rounder. It doesn't save the team a lot of money in the short term, but long-term, they've added an affordable, high end prospect (the 1st), and also made room for Benn and Glennie to get more time in the top six. Boston gets cap flexibility (invaluable right now), a sniper for Savard, a leader in Morrow, and a solid enough backup to challenge Rask continually.
In Dallas:
L1: Loui Eriksson (4.25) - Brad Richards (7.8) - Jamie Benn (0.822) L2: Milan Lucic (4.083) - Mike Ribeiro (5.0) - Scott Glennie (1.275) L3: Steve Ott (1.875) - Tom Wandell (0.875) - Fabian Brunnstrom (1.625) L4: ______UFA_______ - Brian Sutherby (0.925) - _____UFA__________
D1: Stephane Robidas (3.3) - ______UFA___________ D2: Trevor Daley (2.3) - Karlis Skrastins (1.375) D3: Nicklas Grossman (1.125) - Matt Niskanen (1.25)
EX: Marc Fistric (1.0)
GT: Tim Thomas (5.0) - _____UFA________
CAP HIT - 41.93 million
So they have lots of room left over to go shopping for the rest of their roster, and they'll likely finish the season with two pretty decent draft picks. The cap room, plus those picks, should make the deal worth it for them. |
