Cooke trying to reach Bruins' Savard

NHL News blankDave Molinari, Pittsburgh Post-Gazette

Penguins left winger Matt Cooke has "reached out" to Boston center Marc Savard, according to Penguins coach Dan Bylsma.

Odds are the NHL office will do likewise with Cooke soon.

Savard was injured Sunday with a hit to the head by Cooke late in the Penguins' 2-1 victory against the Bruins at Mellon Arena.

Bylsma said Monday that the Penguins had not yet heard from the league about a hearing for Cooke, but "we know they're looking at all [questionable] hits and situations, so we know they're looking at it."

Savard, who got a Grade 2 concussion when Cooke hit him on the right side of the head with his upper left arm or shoulder, flew back to Boston Monday and told the Boston Herald he was experiencing intense headaches and severe fatigue and didn't know when he might be able to resume playing.

Cooke did not participate in an optional practice Monday at Southpointe nor did he speak with reporters when it ended, but Bylsma said Cooke tried to contact Savard.

"I know Matt Cooke has reached out to him," Bylsma said.

He did not elaborate on the precise message Cooke had wanted to deliver.

Bylsma said he did not see the hit as it happened and had not viewed a replay before meeting with reporters after the game Sunday, but he subsequently did watch a replay and offered this assessment:

"I think Matt Cooke's coming back with the intention of breaking up a good scoring chance by one of their players. The unfortunate part is that a guy gets hurt and goes down on the ice. That's not a situation anyone wants to see. It doesn't matter what color uniform he's wearing."

If the NHL decides to suspend Cooke, it could be done anytime before the Penguins' next game, which is Thursday night at Carolina.

Thats ... nice of him, I guess.

Whether he feels genuinely bad or whether he is just trying to save face, no one knows except Cooke (and bbruins, since he can judge intent).

At the end of the day, it wont change anything but its a nice gesture just the same.

FYI .. he should still be suspended for a couple of games.

He will be suspended for sure. Not to the liking of what some might like to see though. I am sure he has the best intentions in trying to get a hold of him....sometimes people do stupid things.

You could see that after the hit, Cooke was feeling really bad.  But too little too late.  A vicious dirty hit.

he defended his hit right after the game, saying he felt it was shoulder on shoulder. maybe he doesn't want to come across as a complete monster in this whole thing. the guy's a s*****bag, plain and simple.

Well the hit was not an elbow... it was bodrerline shoulder mostly bicep.... the elbow never came off his torso .... with that it makes the hit "legal"... that said it was a completely unneccesary hit that almost always ends in some sort of injury... and with that i heard that the league MAY not suspend him on the basis that it was a legal hit with the shoulder and not elbow.... i mean suspending him doesnt make any difference.,,... something must be done to the rules... such as what they do in junior... distinct hits to the head result in a minor penalty... and if it injures a player it should result in a major pnealty, game misconduct, and automatic 1 game suspension.... repeat offenders should recieve high suspension totals accordingly....

but i think he just may not be suspended for this.... i know Bbruins your practically calling for Cookes head... as most Bruins fans are and alot of fans around the league... but what message does it make if you suspend a rather useless and replacable player in Cooke but when a "star" like richards makes an identical hit... he gets nothing... thats playiing favoritism.... rules need to be changed tho

"Cooke's hit was about as clean as a hooker's used heroin needle"

haha on a serious note just based on his hit on Anisimov I think it makes sense to suspend Cooke again. The hits were pretty much the same, and this one was probably worse, so how can he not be suspended. Then again based on Colin's preliminary views and comments on the hit, I don't think he will be.

I definatley think a "Head Shot" rule should be looked into, but as someone said above me the GM's need to decifer how to go about it. Something like an intent to injure clause. Let's be honest players like Chara, Myers, and alot of others above 6'4", their shoulders are right at head level of most other players. When they make head shots sometimes it's unavoidable. I've seen Chara a lot and quite a bit of Myers (cause I really like the kid I follow him a bit). They all can't really be cheap players, but it happens. A lot of players would find themselves in the box for "headshots" just because they are freakishly tall. I've seen Chara a ton and he doesn't use his size to really "lay people out" all that often. He is a "separate players from the puck" player, more so then a "separate players from their consciousness" player most of the time. I've seen multitudes of hits from Chara this season that could be qualified as shots to the head, but they aren't really vicious, and the player skates away fine. A rule penalizing every "head shot" could do more harm then good. It has to be a rule penalizing vicious unnescessary "head shots"

this game pretty much perfectly sums the bruins up this season.

- injuries? check. try our best forward, defenseman, and best goalie this year out.
- questionable reffing? check. thomas being run all night, one of the leafs goals happens right after one of theses instances.
- blown lead in the third? check.
- overtime? check.
- wideman and ryder somehow working their way into single-handedly losing the game? check. why not make it a tag-team effort on the overtime goal?
- bergeron once again by far the best player on the ice? check. the man cannot lose a battle along the boards.
- timmy doing everything under the sun to give the team a chance, only to get no help back? check.
- no bounces go our way? check. how many posts did we get, and how many of the leafs goals were off of bounces and mad scrums?

just a frustrating season.

Hopefully, the people judging these hits can determine what actually IS a headshot and what isnt. Based on the past, I have little confidence in this.

take a look at these quotes by colin campbell.

first, we have the dan carcillo incident where he punches max talbot:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pncrLcI-zGQ

carcillo was given a one game suspension.

then we have cammalleri punching havlat:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_g_r0xcKVIY

cammalleri was not suspended. campbell gave the following reasoning:

"Cammalleri is not a repeat offender and he's no bully."

it seems these incidents were basically only looked at based on whether the players were repeat offensders or not. ummm ok campbell.

now, fast forward to the savard incident. campbell says the following on not suspending cooke:

"I know Matt Cooke is a repeat offender, he's been suspended twice in the last year. I can't suspend Matt Cooke for being a repeat offender, I have to find a reason."

so much for "consistency" campbell...

notice anything about these incidents? they were all done to help the golden boy and his team. get rid of this biased old f.uck andlet someone come in that knows what they're doing.

the hit deemed legal was dirty.

and the league does not punish a repeat offender.

cooke was linked to the bertuzzi/moore incident.

what happens now?  another type of vigilante justice?  which the league is setting up for.

they suspend an instigator and fine the team in the last 5 minutes.

if the bruins actually had the backbone this year....the league would come down heavy on them for retaliating.

they pu ssy out and let the league decide and they go in favor of a repeat goon.

i hope there is somekind of vigilante justice.  just despite the league.

they got rid of bench brawls and put in an instigator rule and things are worse.

let the players police themselves....the  way it used to be.
