 | Tkachuk will decide on retirement ‘quickly’ |
JEREMY RUTHERFORD Blues center Keith Tkachuk hasn't made his decision final, but it appears that the 18-year NHL veteran is leaning toward retirement following the season.
Tkachuk will turn 38 on March 28, and the 2009-10 season has been especially trying on him. He lost several teeth when he was hit in the mouth by a puck on Jan. 2 and recently suffered a displaced finger on his left hand.
Prior to Thursday's game against the New York Rangers, Tkachuk said he wouldn't make a decision until after the season, but that it would happen "fairly quickly."
"I've got some thoughts running through my mind," Tkachuk said. "You get older and you're just not the same way you used to be. It gets a lot harder ... guys are bigger, faster, stronger.
"I know that I can still play, but it's been a long time ... a lot of hard games, a lot of hard years. I'll talk to my wife and talk to (Blues general manager Larry Pleau) and we'll make a decision."
Another indication that Tkachuk could be leaning toward retirement is that he didn't force a trade at the deadline. He has a no-trade clause, and the Blues did not ask him to waive it, but that was likely because they knew Tkachuk didn't want to leave.
"I think I made that pretty clear when I didn't waive my no-trade ..." he said. "The bottom line is I didn't want to play anywhere else this year."
Tkachuk's preference to stay in St. Louis after the deadline didn't go unnoticed by teammates in the Blues' locker room. "That's always been his attitude ... he's always been a great team guy," Blues forward B.J. Crombeen said. "He believes in this team."
