 | Frank J. Selke + Lady Bynd trophy candidates |
habs4ever writes "As my last article dealt with the Hart trophy, I'll now look at the possible candidates of the Frank J. Selke, which is given to the best defensive forward, and the Lady Byng, given to the player who demonstrates the most sportsmanship throughout the season. Obvious names jump to mind for the Frank J. Selke; Mike Peca of the New York Islanders, Jere Lethinen of the Dallas Stars, and Glen Murray of the Bruins. For the Lady Byng, it is a bit less obvious. There are the likes of Pavel Datsyuk, Mike York, and Alexander Mogilny.
For the Frank J. Selke, Mike Peca has a good chance of winning it, as he is having an good offensive season, with 23 goals, 36 assists, for a total of 59 points, and he has a good +/- rating with +17.
Jere Lethinen of the stars, is also having a good offensive season with 22 goals and 23 assists, but he has a higher +/- than Peca with +25.
Glen Murray is my personal favorite, he is having a terrific offensive year, leading the Bruins in points with 65, and is one goal behind Bill Guerin, the leading scorer for the team who has 37. But most of all, his +/- is extremely high, he has +31.
As for the Lady Byng, this one being harder to predict than other trophies, I think these are good choices, but I do not know if they will be even considered by the NHL and the NHLPA.Anyway, Pavel Datsyuk. I'll admit Datsyuk numbers are not stellar(11 goals and 21 assists), but don't forget that he is a rookie and that he only has 4 PIM.
Mike York is a player that I like a lot, and being a Canadian, I am really glad that he is in Edmonton. He is having his break-through year, with 19 goals and 39 assists.(I know some of you will say he had 26 goals last year, but I'm saying this is his most productive season yet.) He also only has 16 PIM.
Another potential candidate could be AlMo. He's having a good year with the Leafs(22 goals and 30 assists), and has in impressive 8PIM.
For the Frank J. Selke, My pick is Glen Murray, and for the Lady Byng, it is Pavel Datsyuk. Too bad Datsyuk won't win the Calder, he surely has the talent to win it, Kovalchuk and Heatley are just better.
