To all of you who think the Avs need to trade for a goalie...

Avalanche blankNMScorps writes "To all of you who think that the Avalanche need to trade for a better goaltender, think about these facts and stats about the Avalanche's new number 1 goaltender, 25 year old David Aebischer!

*David Aebischer is tied for the second most wins in the National Hockey League - with 14 wins. He is behind only New Jersey's Martin Brodeur who has 15.

*David Aebischer ranks 14th in the National Hockey League with a Goals Against Average of only 2.13 . That is better than Tampa Bay's Khabibulin, Detroits Hasek, Toronto's Belfour, and many other elite goaltenders.

*David Aebischer ranks 12th in the National Hockey League in Save Percentage, with a .924%. That is better than St. Louis's Osgood, Toronto's Belfour, Phoenix's Burke, and other elite goaltenders.

*David Aebischer also ranks tied for 7th in the National Hockey League in shutouts - with 2. He is tied with Osgood, Khabibulin, and Boston's Felix Potvin.

*Aebischer has bailed the Avalanche out numerous times this season. He has been one of the three stars of the game on several occasions this season as well.

So, there you go. Think about those numbers as you think that David Aebischer is not a legitimate number one goaltender, and you may change your mind. Fell free to give me your opinion! "

I agree. Aebischer isn't garnering the respect he deserves. The avs should just give the guy a chance before wasting about 5 million plus players/prospects for Olie the washed up goalie. Marty has 16 wins now :)

The scary thing is, Abeischer can either get bounced for having no playoff experience(Turco with Dallas last season) or he could catch fire and take his team to the cup(Giguere). Avs aren't even at full strength yet and I can't wait to see all of these guys on the ice together.

While Aebischer has been playing well, and looks like a legitamate number one goaltender, the reason why some are calling for a more experienced goalie is because no one knows how Aebischer will play in the playoffs.

It's a given Colorado will make the playoffs, but will Aebischer be able to steal the odd playoff game for them? It's a catch-22. For many to consider him to be a legitamate #1, he needs to prove himself in the playoffs, but to do that, he must PLAY in the playoffs. How can he do that when the same folks who are calling for a "legitamate" goaltender say trade for one and let Aebischer ride the pine? He can't.

Given the state of the game, the current roster of the Avs, and the possibility of a lockout next season, the Avs want to win now, and if Lacroix thinks there is a better goalie out there who is available and a trade or signing (Cujo? and yes, i know he hasn't won anything either, but he stole almost every series for the Leafs) makes sense and is reasonable, I think it'll happen. But the likelihood of a trade/signing that makes sense appearing is low.

Let's see what Aebischer can do.

David Aebischer has performed better than many predicted. However, David Aebischer has never had to carry the Avs in the playoffs - a very different type of pressure that David Aebischer has not yet experienced on a regular basis. Also, if David Aebischer gets injured, who then takes the Avs to the promised land? Sauve - the rookie from Hershey?

Trading for a goalie only makes sense if the Avs want a real chance at winning the Cup. Otherwise, Lacroix is simply gambling that the Avs have enough in nets to get the job done. For the sake of the Avs fans, let's just hope the Avs have a more favorable fate than the current Red Wings with 10 of their regular players, including both goaltenders, all injured at the same time. Sometimes trades are made for insurance purposes.

Aebischer is doing well but the Avs can use a vet to back him up.

Its a different story in the playoffs. I can't think of the last time a inexperienced goalie won his team the Cup. Look at all the teams goalies that have won the Cup recently, Brodeur, Belfour, Roy, Hasek etc. If the Avs think they can win the Cup with Aebischer who I'm not even sure has played a playoff game before, then go for it. Not sure that its a good idea though.

Anyone see the Canucks and Avs game? That was the BEST game of the year... and there were only 2 goals AND it ended in a TIE.

Abby was spectacular. Props to him....

Abby has been amazing...i knew he would...ive supported him all through the summer and season. However, i think the Avs should acquire a solid, veteran backup who has playoff exp. to bail out abby if he falters in the playoffs.

Yeah, Aebischer is great, but what happens if he gets injured! Season's over. They don't need a starter as of now, but a backup would help a lot especially in case of injury, wether a veteran starter or a decent backup, the Avs are going to acquire a goaltender before playoff time to have more depth in the crease.

I also agree...Aebischer hasn't received the credit he really deserves for the way he has performed this year. BUT....

- one reason he has seen success is because all the pressure is really off his shoulders. Everyone was expecting him to fall flat on his face. So all he needed to do was go out there and perform...perfom he has!

- what he does in the regular season is all fine and dandy. But does that mean he'll be able to carry this forward into the playoffs?? Or will he pull a Checko?? Personally, i think his performance might be a bit of a trap for the Avs and Pierre Lacroix. If Lacroix believes that he doesn't need a veteran to ride into the playoffs (ie. Burke, Kolzig, etc), i'm betting the Avs will get burnt. But we all know that Lacroix is a SHREWD man. He'll protect himself everyway possible.

He's back.........

Very nice article. It's strange that, given all the hype concerning the alleged "run and gun" nature of the Avalanche offense, that goaltending and defense are what has kept them going.

While I wouldn't object to a veteran goalie, I definitely think he should be relegated (the "veteran", that is) to backup status. Abby has earned his chance.
