Gomez continues his evaluation period with the Sharks
Free agent forward Scott Gomez continues his evaluation period with the Sharks, and for the first time skated with the full team on Monday in Edmonton. Gomez was wearing a teal jersey with the other bottom six forwards and scratches.
A decision on Gomez is not expected until Tuesday at the earliest. The Sharks are evidently making sure that Gomez is in top physical condition before they take a chance on the former Montreal Canadiens player who was recently bought out of the final two years of his contract.
Head coach Todd McLellan was impressed with Gomez on Monday.
San Jose Sharks have not made decision on Scott Gomez
Unrestricted free-agent forward Scott Gomez flew here with the Sharks for their season opener Sunday, but a decision on his future with the team might take another few days.
However, coach Todd McLellan made it clear he didn’t see Gomez’s presence as a distraction.
“Everybody right now is so focused on game one and excited about it,” McLellan said before Sunday’s 4-1 Sharks win over Calgary. “Having Scott around and having him make his decision on whether he likes our environment and whether we like him in our environment is a great opportunity for us over the next couple of days.”
Gomez, 33, seemed fine with the situation as it was and the potential chance to play for the Sharks.
“You always hear about San Jose and you never hear anything bad about the organization,” he said. “We’ll see what happens.”
Gomez likely to sign with Sharks.
Unrestricted free agent has travelled with the San Jose Sharks to Calgary, but he has still not signed a contract with the team.
The Sharks open their season against the Flames on Sunday night, while Gomez is scheduled for more testing.

The San Jose Sharks are among the favorites to land the services of free agent forward Shane Doan, a source has told CSNCalifornia.com.
Doan, who will turn 36 in October, is the top unrestricted NHL free agent still available.
According to the source, the Sharks, who are generally very tight-lipped about personnel decisions, have flown “under the radar” in their pursuit of Doan.
Doan reportedly met with the Vancouver Canucks on Tuesday, and has also drawn interest from the New York Rangers, Philadelphia Flyers, Pittsburgh Penguins and Buffalo Sabres. His preference is to remain in Phoenix, but the uncertain ownership situation there has led to him exploring other options.
There are reports that Doan is seeking a four-year contract worth $30 million, averaging out to a $7.5 million cap hit. According to CapGeek.com, San Jose has approximately $5.57 million in cap space.
REPORT: NASH TRADE TALKS HEATING UP AHEAD OF NHL DRAFT
The market for Columbus Blue Jackets winger Rich Nash is heating up ahead of next week’s NHL Draft.
According to the Columbus Dispatch, as many as seven teams have had ‘significant discussions’ with the club in the last 10 days about acquiring Nash.
The report adds that the New York Rangers, San Jose Sharks, Philadelphia Flyers, Toronto Maple Leafs and Carolina Hurricanes are among the teams that have expressed interest.
Blue Jackets’ general manager Scott Howson said that the club had, “significantly more discussions this week,” but would not comment directly on the most recent trade talks regarding the team captain.
SHARKS ACQUIRE STUART FROM RED WINGS FOR PROSPECT, PICK
The Detroit Red Wings gave defenceman and the San Jose Sharks a head start on completing a reunion for next season.
Detroit sent the potential unrestricted free agent back to his original team in San Jose on Sunday in exchange for forward and a conditional seventh-round draft pick in 2014.
Stuart had made clear that he wanted to be closer to his family, which still lives in San Jose, and now he gets three weeks to negotiate with the Sharks before possibly becoming a free agent July 1.
“That’s the goal of making the trade,” Stuart said. “We’ll work on it for the next three weeks and try to work it out. We have some time to figure that out. For the Red Wings to give me time to figure that out shows what a class organization they are. I owe them a lot.”
Will dwindling goalie pool help Sharks land Nash?
The Washington Capitals’ trade of Tomas Vokoun, and his subsequent two-year contract in Pittsburgh, takes a talented veteran goalie off of the market. Boston’s Tim Thomas has decided to take a year off to spend more time with his family. Meanwhile, the Blue Jackets’ Curtis Sanford has agreed to play in Russia next season in the KHL.
In a roundabout way, those moves may improve the Sharks’ chances of landing Columbus captain Rick Nash, something they reportedly did around last February’s trade deadline.
The Blue Jackets have already made it known that they are looking for a different look in goal next season from starter Steve Mason, who was dreadful, as Columbus posted the worst record in the NHL. Our friends at ProHockeyTalk.com point out that the Blue Jackets have just two goaltenders signed for next season – Mason, and the 22-year-old Allen York, who has just 11 games of NHL experience.
If they do in fact decide to move Nash, as is expected, you can assume that the Blue Jackets would want a netminder in return as part of the deal. The Sharks’ prospect pool is thin, but goaltending is still one area that is considered a position of strength within the organization.
The Sharks have starter Antti Niemi locked up for another three years at a cap hit of $3.8 million according to CapGeek.com, while backup Thomas Greiss is signed through next season at $587,500. Prospect Alex Stalock, who looks to be completely recovered from a serious nerve injury more than a year ago, is a restricted free agent, as is AHL All-Star Tyson Sexsmith. Harri Sateri, another minor leaguer, has one year remaining on his deal.
