Should Sharks give Turco a call?
Veteran goaltender Marty Turco still wants to play in the NHL. The Sharks just lost one of their netminders, Antero Niittymaki, until the middle of December at the earliest.
See where we’re going with this?
Turco, who was signed by the Blackhawks in the summer of 2010 in order to help defend their Stanley Cup title, was not brought back by Chicago at the conclusion of his one-year deal last year. After rookie Corey Crawford took the starting role from Turco last season, the Blackhawks decided not to resign the 36-year-old.
No trades looming for Sharks as NHL deadline approaches
The NHL trade deadline is only three weeks away, but with his team on a 7-0-1 roll as it faces Alexander Ovechkin and the Washington Capitals on Tuesday night, Sharks general manager Doug Wilson does not sound like someone about to wheel and deal.
Sharks may be closing in on deal for experienced, high-energy forward
Yeah, I know, aren’t I off today? Well, sometimes it’s hard to stay away even when that’s the whole point of skipping a mid-winter trip to the Arizona desert.
But word starting to circulate tonight says don’t be surprised if the Sharks make a deal sometime soon to add more experience, speed, size, energy and grit to the third or fourth line.
Sharks should trade Setoguchi?
- The problem with the San Jose Sharks is they are getting absolutely no secondary scoring from playoff hero Joe Pavelski, Ryane Clowe or Devin Setoguchi. It’s Joe Thornton, Dany Heatley and Patrick Marleau and bust. They should deal Setoguchi for a defenceman who can move the puck.
Time Not On Sharks Side
Of the 5 expansion teams of the early 1990’s, only the San Jose Sharks have not made it to the Cup final.
While still a very good team, who did make it to the final 4 last year, the Sharks did not make much improvement to their roster this off-season and in fact suffered 3 major losses in their lineup.
It will be interesting to see if they can overcome the loss of captain Rob Blake, long time number 1 goalie Evgeny Nabokov and checking centre Manny Malholtra.
It won’t be easy. And much of the onus will be on the core players they’ve kept to see if they can finally deliver when it matters most.
Sharks Resign Marleau and Pavelski
Per San Jose Sharks official website, both Patrick Marleau and Joe Pavelski have been signed to new four year deals. Details not disclosed.
Sharks: The Better Version
The Sharks came within 4 wins of the cup finals, the closest they have post lockout. Unfortunently it was not enough. There were 3 MAIN weaknesses i saw. To soft/small defence, poor goaltending, no bodies in front of the net. I think if they address these 3 things then they are the primary contenders for the cup.
Nabokov on future with Sharks: ‘I want to be part of it, but I don’t know if it’
A lot going on today as the Sharks showed up to clean out their lockers and meet with the media for the first time since leaving the United Center on Sunday night. Coach Todd McLellan and GM Doug Wilson were also on hand and here are some of the highlights:
***
Evgeni Nabokov sounded Wednesday like a goalie who wanted to be back with the Sharks next season, but wasn’t sure if he would get that opportunity.
Sharks surely won't be able to keep both Marleau and Nabokov
For those of you scoring at home, the Sharks' exhilarating yet ultimately frustrating 2010 playoff adventure lasted for 15 games and 40 days. Including overtimes.
But put on your face shield and mouth guard. Because the next 36 days could be even more emotional and brutal in their own special way.
