As currently scheduled, Brian Burke plans to be on the grounds of York University Sunday afternoon watching the singles final of the Rogers Cup.
Doesn’t exactly sound like a hockey GM girding for a blockbuster, does it? Maybe they’ll let the Maple Leafs boss set up a war room adjoining Centre Court as the final hours of the Tomas Kaberle trade watch tick down.
Ever since the 2009 NHL entry draft, when the Bruins and Maple Leafs reportedly had a deal fall apart at the last minute that would've sent Leafs defenseman Tomas Kaberle and draft picks to Boston for Phil Kessel and draft picks, the Bruins and Kaberle have been linked in trade rumors. Kessel ended up going to Toronto in a later deal that saw the Bruins get Toronto's first- and second-round picks in 2010 -- which turned into Tyler Seguin with the No. 2 overall pick and Jared Knight in the second round -- as well as Toronto's 2011 first round pick. Kaberle remained a Leaf.
• Why hasn't first-line Ducks winger Bobby Ryan accepted the Ducks' five-year, $25 million offer?
Ryan already has said he's not worth more than linemates Ryan Getzlaf and Corey Perry, both of whom earn an average of $5.3 million a year, so what's the hold-up?
Is Ryan's agent trying get another team to make a bigger offer to the restricted free agent, forcing the Ducks to match? My guess is Ryan believes he'll be worth more than $5 million in the final years of the contract, so he would prefer to sign for, say, only three years.
Trade Rumors: Simon Gagne moving to the Los Angeles Kings?
Just a quick update here, with the Kings now appearing to be falling out of the Kovalchuk sweepstakes it appears they are now making a play for the Flyers Simon Gagne.
Gagne’s agent has reported to ESPN that he has been given permission to talk trade regarding his client with the Kings. His $5.25 million cap hit would most definitely be more friendly to the Kings future cap situation with players like Drew Doughty coming up for contract negotiations in the next couple years.
HTR Feature Article: Kings, Maple Leafs and Rangers are believed to have expressed interest in Gagne
The only NHL team currently operating above the NHL salary cap, the Flyers have until the start of the regular season on Oct. 7 to trim their payroll to $59.4 million. They are believed to be in trade talks with a handful of NHL teams interested in Gagne, who has one year and $5.25 million remaining on his contract.

leafy writes " Sportsnet.ca reports that Marc Savard has waived his no-movement clause and given the Boston Bruins consent to trade him to either the Toronto Maple Leafs or Ottawa Senators. "
