Holdouts possible for group of talented youngsters

Maybe it’s the return of Alexei Yashin to the scene of the crime that’s causing the disruption.

Yashin, after all, was the man at the centre of the last great NHL holdout when he sat out the entire 1999-2000 season while trying to force his way out of Ottawa.

He’s back in North America these days, skating in irregular workouts with other New York Islander players, and suddenly there seems to be at least the possibility that the holdout, as a negotiating tool, may be on its way back as a feature of the NHL fall. Odd, that.

A Russian jet carrying a local hockey team crashed Wednesday while taking off in western Russia, killing 36 people and leaving one critically injured, officials said.

The Russian Emergency Situations Ministry said the Yak-42 crashed immediately after taking off from an airport near the city of Yaroslavl, on the Volga River, 240 kilometres northeast of Moscow. It said one person survived the crash with grave injuries.

The past few years, new players like Crosby and Ovechkin have shown up, and have been compared to the greatness of the older players. They have shown their own great skills and skill at the sport. Though the age and time may be different, the new generation of players still show the same excitement as the old ones did.
