Caps working the phones

RUMOURS DU JOUR

Trying to stave off unemployment, Washington Capitals GM George McPhee is working the phones. Three names to watch are wingers Troy Brouwer ($2.35 million cap hit through 2015-16), Joel Ward ($3 million, 2014-15) and Jason Chimera ($1.75 million, 2013-14). All are available because the Caps want to clear cash. McPhee would like to free up money and then reap the rewards of futility with a high draft pick …

Liles in limbo with Maple Leafs?

While it may be a stretch to say defenceman John-Michael Liles is on borrowed time with the Maple Leafs, it’s not out of the realm of possibility.

We’re not suggesting Liles, who has an annual salary cap hit of $3.875-million US through the 2015-16 season, has played his last game as a Leaf. But he has been a healthy scratch for three consecutive games and could be out again on Saturday night in Ottawa against the Senators.

Smaller midseason deals matter in NHL

The first conversation with his former assistant general manager regarding a trade happened about six weeks before the trade deadline. Chicago Blackhawks GM Stan Bowman chatted with Winnipeg Jets GM Kevin Cheveldayoff, who made it clear that if the playoffs didn’t look like a realistic option, then his potential unrestricted free agents would be available at the trade deadline.

The two stayed in touch and the phone conversations became more frequent as the deadline neared. Bowman estimates that on Feb. 27 of last year, the day of the trade deadline, he spoke with the Jets at least 10 times. He had homed in on one player he just had to have at the trade deadline: defenseman Johnny Oduya.

Are teams already after Ruff

So, Lindy Ruff is on the market.

That should cause a few neck problems in the coaching fraternity around the NHL.

Ruff had been the longest-serving coach in the NHL when the inevitable tap on the shoulder came from Buffalo Sabres general manager Darcy Regier Wednesday.

DIPIETRO ON WAIVERS

Looks like the Islanders have decided to part ways with Rick DiPietro.

Relief? Islanders place DiPietro on waivers

It appears the Rick DiPietro era is coming to a close on Long Island, as the Islanders put the goalie on waivers.

Is Shane O’Brien on the Trade Block?

Do you think Shane O’Brien is on the trading block?
— Chantal Rouleau, Canada

Chantal – Yeah, I kind of do think so. Now that Tyson Barrie and Stefan Elliott are back up with the team, it seems like they are getting

Given that you’ve missed the past few weeks because of a concussion, Gabe Landeskog, will you consider changing the way you play when you come back? “Absolutely not,” said Landeskog. (Getty Images file)

a foothold on top-six spots. One would have thought O’Brien would have gained a top-six job with the injuries to Erik Johnson and Ryan Wilson, but even then he hasn’t been able to stay in the lineup.

He simply seemed to fall out of favor with Joe Sacco coming out of training camp, and things haven’t changed much since. So, yeah, it makes some sense that he could be possible trade bait.

Source: Chiarelli chats with Flyers GM Holmgren

While it’s difficult to zero in on exactly what Bruins general manager Peter Chiarelli is looking for, sources indicated to CSNNE.com that the B’s GM was in Pittsburgh last night to watch the highly entertaining Penguins-Flyers game.

Chiarelli chatted with Philadelphia Flyers GM Paul Holmgren for the entire intermission between the second and the third period before the Flyers held on for a 6-5 victory at the CONSOL Energy Center.
